Which Betting Card Game Suits Beginners? House Edge Compared

which betting card games has the best odds to win

If you are new to casino card games, the best first choice is not the one with the biggest payouts. It is the one you can understand fully and that costs you the least on average while you learn. This guide compares five common casino card games by how easy they are to learn and how large the house edge is, so you can choose a betting card game with clear eyes.

Two numbers to understand first

House edge is the average percentage of each bet the casino keeps over the long run. A lower number means your money tends to last longer. It does not mean you will win. Every round is still random, and short sessions can go far above or below the average.

Decisions are the choices you make after betting. Games with decisions can have a lower edge, but only if you make the right choices. Games without decisions are easier but leave you nothing to improve.

The house edge figures below are from published analysis of standard rules. Online and live tables can use different rules, so read each game's rules screen.

Baccarat: easiest rules, low edge on the main bets

You bet on Banker, Player or Tie, and the cards are dealt by fixed rules. There is nothing else to decide. The house edge is about 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player. The Tie bet is about 14.36%, far higher, even though its payout looks attractive.

For a complete beginner, baccarat is often the gentlest start. Stick to Banker or Player and skip the Tie and side bets.

Blackjack: lowest edge, but you have to learn it

Blackjack asks you to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. You choose to hit, stand, double or split. With good rules and correct basic strategy, the edge can be about 0.28%, which is among the lowest in any casino. Without basic strategy, the edge is noticeably higher.

Blackjack rewards beginners who are willing to study a strategy chart. Our page on casino blackjack basics explains the core decisions. Practice with small stakes until the chart feels automatic.

Casino War: simple, but watch the tie

Each side gets one card and the higher card wins. If the cards tie, you can surrender half your bet or "go to war" by doubling. Going to war on ties gives a house edge of about 2.88%. The separate tie bet is about 18.65%, one of the worst bets on the casino floor.

Casino War is easy to follow, but the edge is higher than baccarat for a similarly simple game.

Red Dog: a gap-guessing game

Two cards are dealt, and you bet on whether a third card will fall between them. The size of the gap sets the payout. With six decks, the house edge is about 2.80%. Red Dog is quick to learn and similar to the Filipino in-between card game many players already know.

Pai Gow Poker: slow and steady

You split seven cards into a five-card hand and a two-card hand, and both must beat the dealer's to win. Many hands end in a push, where no money changes hands. The house edge is about 1.46%. The game takes longer to learn than baccarat, but its slow pace suits players who want long sessions on a small budget.

Quick comparison for a first betting card game

  • Easiest to learn: baccarat, then Casino War and Red Dog.
  • Lowest edge if played well: blackjack, then baccarat Banker and Player.
  • Bets to avoid as a beginner: baccarat Tie, Casino War tie bet, and most side bets. Three Card Poker's main bet, for comparison, sits at about 3.37%.

What about Filipino card games?

Games like tongits and pusoy are played between players, not against the house in the same way, so a casino house edge does not apply in the same form. Skill and reading opponents matter more. If these are more familiar to you, see our list of Pinoy card games online.

Playing within your limits

No betting card game can be beaten by a betting system. Raising your stake after a loss only increases how much you can lose. Pick a session budget, use small stakes while learning, and stop when the budget is gone.

If you decide to play for real money, you can register at OKBet. Casino games are for adults 21+ only, and every outcome is random.
