For many families, bingo is the game that turns up at fiestas, parish fundraisers and community nights, with someone at the front calling numbers and everyone else leaning over their cards. Today the same game is also played on phones. This guide explains how Filipino bingo is usually played, what changes when it moves online, and how to keep it a fun, affordable pastime.
The card most local players know is the 75-ball card, the same format used in American-style bingo. Each card is a grid of five columns and five rows, headed by the letters B, I, N, G and O. The middle square is a free space, so every card starts with one square already marked.
Each column draws from its own range of numbers:
The caller draws a ball and announces it with its letter, such as "B-7" or "O-68". Because you know the letter, you only need to scan one column, which is why experienced players can follow several cards at once.
The organiser decides the winning pattern before the game starts. Common ones include a straight line across, down or diagonally, the four corners, a letter shape such as "X" or "T", and blackout, where every square on the card must be marked. Always check which pattern is in play before the first ball, because marking a line when the game calls for blackout wins nothing.
Patterns do not change your chances. Every ball is drawn at random, so no pattern, lucky number or seat makes a win more likely.
Online bingo keeps the card, the letters and the numbers, but several things work differently:
Online and electronic bingo is a regulated activity. PAGCOR's Electronic Gaming Licensing page states that its Electronic Gaming Licensing Department oversees local operators that offer traditional bingo, electronic bingo (e-bingo), e-casino games and other games, including the online platforms of those operators. PAGCOR also publishes lists of accredited operators and registered domain names on that page, which you can use to check a site before you play.
Scam groups sometimes run fake bingo "games" through chat apps and ask for payment by e-wallet transfer. Our guide to bingo scam warning signs lists what to watch for.
Part of what makes Filipino bingo enjoyable is that it is a shared, low-stakes game. Online play can keep that feel if you set a few limits:
