Tiger Cave Temple was perched atop a karst mountain, and it would take 1,237 steps to get there. Or 1,260 steps. A German backpacker noticed our panting after a hundred steps, jokingly comforting us. We could hear the heavy thumping of the heart several hundred steps later.
We were about to give up, but a couple of Italian ladies offered a helping hand. It gave us the motivation we needed. We reached the summit one hour later. We couldn’t find the Tiger Cave Temple. Or we might have overlooked it along the way.
Victor, a lanky English backpacker, was busy taking photos of the huge, golden Buddha atop the summit. He stopped and noticed our exhaustion. He remarked that Arthur, an overweight lad, managed to make it to the top the other day. If it was not for Gavin, his travel bud (and coursemate), it might take him two hours, or more, to reach the summit.
The two stopped every fifty steps and chatted for a minute or two. They did it for one and a half hours. The trio were staying in a hotel in Ao Nang Beach. The panorama of the coastline and the sunset was worth dying for. But we’re veering off.
Victor remarked that the tiger was a sacred mammal in Asia. And this very spot was considered sacred. We suspected that he had been around this part of the world for months, but we were still too exhausted to comment. The summit offers a lovely panorama of karst mountains jutting out of fields. We were still looking for the Tiger Cave Temple. Thirty minutes to go before our guide fetches us. We forgot to ask Victor about the Tiger Cave Temple. And Tigger was the only tiger we knew.
