Game providers are coming up with updated versions of games based on Greek Gods mythology. And you wonder why.
Greek mythology and other themed slot games include symbols of the mighty gods and their offsprings, the heroic demigods, adding layers of immersion into the gameplay. Furthermore, not a few slot players are geeks for the immortal tales of Olympians.
It won’t be long before game providers would come up with a slot game based on Rick Riordan’s books. Percy Jackson? It remains to be seen, but we’re betting on seeing a slot version of the Lightning Thief.
It wouldn’t be right to dive into the game without knowing the backstory behind the Pragmatic Play Slot Spartan King. It might be long, but we guarantee that it should make you appreciate Pragmatic Play game for developing this “brutal” slot game. You might want to play more.
Frank Miller’s “300”, on which Pragmatic Play Slot Spartan King is based on, capitalized on the macho culture that can still draw the crowds. The days of Arnold Schwarzenegger starring in a big-budget movie and then ruling the box office may be long gone, but the “Terminator” star can play a Marvel superhero. After all, the Marvel Studio capitalized on the macho culture that put Kevin Feige into the Billionaire Club. What is “300” all about?
“300” is the retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, pitting the Persian Empire against the Greek city states led by Sparta. It was one of the prominent battles of the Second Persian invasion of Greece. Or the Greco-Persian Wars.
The conflict originated from the aftermath of the collapse of the Mycenaean civilization, which led to the migration of ancient Greeks to Asia Minor. Three different tribes, or three different groups from Mycenae, settled in what would be modern-day Turkey. A conflict arose, which wouldn’t be too different from the cause of the Peloponnesian War, and this internal strife among the three groups would reach ancient Persia. If the tales were to be believed, the Oracle of Delphi was consulted. It was about an invasion of ancient Greece. The rest was history.
It was hard to tell if this source was true at all, or if there were other probable causes, but Miller omitted the strange dynamics between Athens and Sparta. Or their simmering conflict that resulted in the Peloponnesian War. Democracy was founded during the reign of Pericles in Athens. Greek art and literature flourished during his time.
And the Acropolis was the place to go. Sparta, on the other hand, became renowned for their expertise in the “art” of war. Not that Athens was far behind, as this city state became formidable on sea; Miller might’ve thought about the Battle of Marathon, a seaside fight between Persia and the ancient Athenians.
Athens and Sparta were like oil and water, yet their visions of ruling and philosophy would shape the history of ancient Greece. We almost forgot to tell that the ancient Athenians attempted to make peace with the Persians. But not the Spartans.
The Battle of Thermopylae lasted longer than what Miller had envisioned in his graphic novel. What happened became a study on how the Spartan men, whose numbers were smaller than the Persians, managed to defend their homeland. This mighty force was led by Leonidas, where locals and tourists could see a statue of him erected in his honor.
Warfare became complicated, or the means to level the playing field became more subtle, but the achievements, or the heroics, of Leonidas and his men couldn’t be forgotten. Practical (as some historians would put it). It doesn’t matter if the Spartan system is rigid, which led to the decline and demise of this city state. All that was left was the action and victory over insurmountable odds.
If the action doesn’t resonate with you, then it’s time to play Spartan King. What makes this slot game tick?
If there should be an award for the best slot game based on a historical source, then Spartan King would be the hands-down winner. Some slot players wouldn’t be interested in the Battle of Thermopylae and it’s OK. The fierce look of Leonidas should be good enough.
You, the player, would be King Leonidas. The backdrop is a grassy slope overlooking the sea. Or the Malian Gulf. The uneven terrain would factor in this battle, and the Spartans know it too well. (If not for a narrow pass, then the fight would have ended earlier.) But you’re the underdog in this game. It should motivate you to protect Greece at all costs.
Check out the highlight video on the Spartan King slot demo. You would know to adjust the setting (to maximize the fun), know the features and become aware of the pitfall of online slot playing. And know the paytable by heart. Symbols included.
The symbols relive the glory, and gore, of ancient Greece. Newbies, you’ve been warned. This scatter game can be brutal if you rather play casual. It’s not the reason to back out and look for another slot game to play. After all, you’re not reading our review if you don’t think you have a fighting chance. Let’s go back to the all-too important symbols.
When you play an actual game, you would encounter different symbols that bring back the heyday of ancient Greece. Ship, jar, and helmet are three of several standard symbols. Take note that they pay differently depending on the number of each symbol appearing on your mobile screen. Matching three could award you a minimum payout of up to 235 coins while matching five could award you a maximum payout of up to 750 coins.
The generic symbols, namely A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9, are low-paying symbols. But different symbols correspond to different rewards. Matching three of one symbol could award you a minimum payout of up to 10 coins while matching five could award you a maximum payout of up to 200 coins.
We assure you that you would enjoy playing the base game of Spartan King Pragmatic Play. And we’re not saying it because it would trigger your hero instinct. You would discover bonus features that should boost your game play.
We mentioned the “WILD” symbol, “BONUS” symbol, and free spins a while ago. You, as King Leonidas, would complete that winning combination. In other words, you can win up to 1,000 coins. You can be awarded with a payout of up to 20x your total bet. And you can get 12 free spins at the most.
But slot players must be aware. Game responsibly! Don’t let these figures get into your head. The outcome might be different, if not brutal, if you play with abandon. Or a little.
If you’re not a geek for Greek mythology, then playing Spartan King would make you appreciate this great civilization. It might prompt you to check out Fortunes of Sparta (by Blueprint), which offers a massive 10,000x bet potential.
