Esports Betting Odds: Formats, Implied Probability and Margin

Every esports bet starts with a price. Learning to read that price properly tells you two things: how much you get back if you win, and what chance the bookmaker gives the result. This guide covers the three common odds formats, how to turn any of them into a percentage, and how to see the margin built into a market.

The numbers below are examples for learning only. They are not real prices for any match.

Decimal odds: the format most Filipino bettors see

Decimal odds show the total return for every ₱1 you stake, including the stake itself.

• Team A at 1.50: a ₱100 bet returns ₱150, so the profit is ₱50.
• Team B at 2.60: a ₱100 bet returns ₱260, so the profit is ₱160.

The lower number is the favourite. The higher number is the underdog. Decimal odds are always above 1.00, and the closer they are to 1.00, the more likely the bookmaker thinks that result is.

Fractional and American odds

You may also see esports betting odds in other formats, especially on international sites and broadcasts.

Fractional odds show profit compared with stake. 3/2 means you win ₱3 for every ₱2 staked. To turn a fraction into decimal odds, divide and add 1: 3 ÷ 2 + 1 = 2.50.

American odds use a plus or minus sign, based on ₱100.

• +150 means a ₱100 bet makes ₱150 profit. Decimal equivalent: 150 ÷ 100 + 1 = 2.50.
• −200 means you must stake ₱200 to make ₱100 profit. Decimal equivalent: 100 ÷ 200 + 1 = 1.50.

All three formats can describe the same price. 2.50, 3/2 and +150 all pay the same amount.

Turning odds into implied probability

Implied probability is the chance of a result that the price suggests. With decimal odds, divide 1 by the odds:

• 1 ÷ 1.50 = 0.667, about 66.7%
• 1 ÷ 2.60 = 0.385, about 38.5%
• 1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40, exactly 40%

This is the most useful skill in reading esports betting odds. It lets you ask a clear question: do I think this team's real chance is higher or lower than the percentage in the price? If you cannot answer that with some confidence, the bet is just a guess.

Spotting the bookmaker's margin

Add up the implied probabilities for every outcome in a market. In a fair market, they would total exactly 100%. In practice, they add up to more. That extra is the margin, sometimes called the overround or "vig".

Example: Team A 1.50 (66.7%) and Team B 2.60 (38.5%) add up to 105.2%. The margin is about 5.2%.

Why it matters:

• A lower margin means more of the money staked goes back to bettors on average.
• Margins are often higher on niche markets, such as first blood or exact map scores, than on the main match winner.
• Margins can change between pre-match and live betting.

You can work out a rough "fair" probability by dividing each implied probability by the total. 66.7 ÷ 105.2 = about 63.4% for Team A. That is the bookmaker's view without the margin.

How esports odds move

Prices are not fixed. They move as new information comes in and as money is placed. In esports, common triggers include roster changes, a stand-in player, a new game patch, the series format (best of one or best of three), and in live betting, events inside the game. Questions to ask before you place a bet

• What does this price say the chance is, in percent?
• Do I have a real reason, based on recent results or the lineup, to disagree with it?
• How large is the margin in this market compared with the main match winner?
• Is this a format, such as a single map, where upsets happen often?
• Is this stake within the budget I set before the match?

Odds are a guide, not a promise

Even a short favourite loses some of the time, and long runs of losses can happen to anyone. Understanding esports betting odds helps you see what you are paying for, but it does not make any bet safe. Betting is for adults 21 and over.
